    Despite the fact that nearly every job book tells you to send a thank-you letter after an interview, studies have shown that only about 5% of candidates do so. Here's a tip that will catapult you to the very top of that 5%. When you go for an interview with a company, plan ahead. Take a stack of thank-you notes in your briefcase. Personally I recommend blank, folding cards with matching envelopes like you can find in any good stationery store - something high quality. Since you rarely know how exactly many people you're going to meet, take 8-10 or so.

    Make sure to get business cards from everyone you meet, or at the very least, get their names. This includes the receptionist.

    Then, after the interview is over, leave the company's office and go to your car a coffee shop, a main lobby, or somewhere nearby. Write out your thank-you cards to everyone you met, and then take the stack back to the receptionist and ask him or her to deliver them to the people that you met. Oh, and put the card for the receptionist somewhere in the middle - that way he or she will have a nice surprise shortly after you leave and you will really stand out. Very, very few candidates deliver their thank-you notes that promptly, and even fewer bother to thank the receptionist. And in a close call, their opinion of you can count! While this won't salvage a horrible interview, it will make a good one really shine.
